Gerald Stanford (1947)

Gerald Stanford, previously Steinhardt (1947) died in May 2022, aged 91. What an amazing life he led! He was born in Hamburg in 1931 to a German (Jewish) father and English mother, but when his father had an anonymous phone call just before the infamous Krystallnacht, saying ‘get the boy out now’, he did – which is how Gerald ended up living with his English grandparents in Alderley Edge, and in due course attending King’s. From school, he joined first the merchant navy, then the Royal Navy, and finally the Royal Canadian Navy, with whom he eventually retired as a Lieutenant Commander. One career over, Gerry, as he was by then known, began another. He studied in Nova Scotia to gain an LLB, and soon progressed to setting up his own chambers, in Victoria, specialising in maritime law.
