Tim Allmand-Smith [1958] died in September 2022, aged 82. His mother was a King’s teacher – ‘mum’ at home, ‘sir’ at school, in those days! He credited the school with generating a great love of sport and outdoor pursuits that he carried on throughout his life – squash, and later golf, skiing and sailing mainly. Tim enjoyed a very successful business career, primarily in the Far East, although he began in Jamaica, until a very public argument with the Prime Minister of the time soon saw his work permit withdrawn! He returned to work in London, but was soon head-hunted first by Sime Darby to take up a management position in the Far East, and then by The Swire Group, whose Industrial Division in Hong Kong he managed. Further promotion involved Tim in a great deal of travel throughout the far east and the west coast of USA, and as company chair he was responsible for building what is now one of the largest Coca-Cola bottling plants in the world, in Salt Lake City. He bought a house in Utah, which became a golf and winter sports retreat for the rest of his life, and built another in southern Spain on his retirement in 1993, although he later moved to Midhurst in Sussex after a stroke.
