Matthew’s journey at King’s began in 1983 in the Junior School and ceased in 1993, during which time his father was the Head of PE/Sport at Kings. Matthew played copious amounts of sport during school, including playing in the 1st XV and Rugby for Cheshire, Athletics for Cheshire and was also the captain of Mr Jordan's 3rd XI Cricket Team, who was convinced that Matt was called Tarquin, and referred to him as such throughout the season. Studies included History, Geography and B Studies with Mrs Wilson, Hill, Adams, Hart and Badger. Alongside this, Matthew participated in an abundance of drama productions, including ‘Hired Man’, ‘Carousel’, ‘Beaux Stratagem’, ‘Guys and Dolls’ and ‘Nicholas Nickleby’. Not only was term time clearly a busy time for Matthew but during the school holidays, he worked on the maintenance team too with Lee and Keith which was great fun and taught him a lot… 

In 1993 Matthew moved on to Edinburgh University where he studied geography, graduating in 1997 with an MA(Hons). During his time in Edinburgh he played Rugby for the university team and Rugby League for Scotland Universities then the full Rugby League team vs France. He also partook in Camp America twice as a riding instructor and was involved in Operation Raleigh to Zimbabwe.

By 1998, Matthew has migrated to South Africa and was teaching geography and chemistry at Parktown Boys High School and was coaching the 1st XV rugby team on the Gauteng Circuit vs the top Transvaal Schools, including Pretoria Boys High, Jeppe High, Helpmakaar Hoer Schule etc...

In 1999, Matthew returned to England and joined the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst when he continued to play rugby and polo for Sandhurst and he was even commissioned into 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards (the Senior Cavalry Regiment of the Line!). By 1999 he had progressed into the British Army where he acted as Reconnaissance Troop Commander and played rugby for the QDG and British Army, polo for British Army Captains and Subalterns, Adjutant of ATR Winchester, all alongside being involved in multiple Operational Tours until his time in the British Army came to an end in 2003.

From then until 2006, Matthew took upon the role of Events Director for Earls Court and Olympia where he was in charge of organising and running concerts, trade shows, consumer shows and other events. However, Matthew recalls that the commuting and weekend at work which comes with the London life wasn’t for him and so in 2006 he decided to follow in the family tradition of teaching and thus completed his PGCE at Oxford University in preparation for a wide variety of teaching roles which he would engaged in from 2007 to the present date, including teaching at Lord Wandsworth College where he was the coach of 1st XV, Abingdon School where he coached the U15 XV and took charge of the land based conditioning training for 1st VIII Rowing who won the 'Fabled Triple' of Schools Head of the River (Thames), Nationals School (Nottingham) and the Princess Elizabeth Cup (Henley) all while commanding the Army CCF. After his successes at Abindgon, Matthew moved on to Stowe School where he was appointed Head of Geography and Head of Polo) until he returned to King’s where he taught Geography, Equestrianism and Rugby before advancing to West Hill School and then Ashton Sixth Form College where he was once again appointed Head of Geography.

Matthew still keeps up his sporting hobbies, now playing at Newbury RFC, Kirtlington Polo Club and Hollingworth Cricket Club where he keeps wicket and opens the batting at Hollingworth in the Derbyshire and Cheshire League.

Alongside teaching, Matthew also runs as AirBnB business in the Peak District Area, an equine transportation company and his farm where he have 3 horses and, having retired from polo as it’s ‘too dangerous for old people’ has now taken up show jumping instead, which is apparently not dangerous at all… Sadly, Matthew played his last rugby match in 2015, with a blown shoulder and only one Achilles tendon left.

Matthew married Gaynor, a solicitor based in Manchester and they have two daughters together, their eldest is at Cheltenham Ladies College and their youngest is still at primary school. Sadly, Matthew’s father passed away but his mother still lives in Rainow, while his brother now lives in Brisbane, Australia.
